Youth Music Programs in Kansas City
Inspiring the Next Generation of Artists
YSKC Academy is the enrichment and pre-professional training division of the Youth Symphony of Kansas City. Designed to deepen musicianship, expand artistic horizons, and cultivate confident young performers, the Academy provides high-level chamber music opportunities, performance showcases, and a rotating roster of elective courses. It is available exclusively to current YSKC musicians, offering a flexible, Sunday-based schedule that supports student growth beyond traditional rehearsals.
Beyond the Stage: Developing Musicianship for Life
Since its launch in the 2021–22 season, YSKC Academy has empowered students through elective classes in music theory, performance psychology, composition, and more. Whether students are refining technical skills, exploring artistic leadership, or preparing for conservatory-level studies, the Academy nurtures talent within a creative and collaborative environment.
Chamber Music & Solo Opportunities
At the heart of the Academy lies its robust chamber music program. Students are placed into small ensembles—string quartets, wind or brass quintets—and coached weekly by professional musicians. These ensembles are made up of Principal players of each orchestra and other YSKC musicians via application and audition.
These ensembles rehearse on Sunday afternoons and present two formal performances twice each year, and other pop-up performances around Kansas City, offering students experience in both formal venues and intimate community settings.
Complementing this ensemble work are the Solo Showcase events. Each semester, students submit video auditions for adjudication. Selected performers are featured in a special recital celebrating the individual student talent that makes YSKC Orchestras special. Solo Showcase I is held in September (with video auditions due by September 4), and Solo Showcase II takes place in March (auditions due February 11, 2026).

🎓 2025–26 Elective Courses
YSKC Academy’s elective classes are divided into two levels—Junior School for Debut and Philharmonic Orchestra members (typically grades 5–8), and Senior School for Classical and Symphony Orchestra students. These courses are held on Sundays and offer concentrated, short-format instruction in areas rarely explored in standard ensemble settings.
