Benjamin Gerrard

Administrative Assistant

Benjamin Gerrard is a doctoral conducting student and teaching assistant in the band area at the University of Missouri–Kansas City Conservatory. He also serves as a Teaching Artist for Harmony Project KC and an Administrative Assistant for the Youth Symphony of Kansas City.

From 2023 to 2025, Gerrard served as Director of Bands at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, Florida, where he taught the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Chamber Winds, and AP Music Theory. Under his leadership, the Wind Symphony received national recognition as a 2024 Mark of Excellence Winner and performed at the 2025 Music for All National Concert Band Festival and the 2023 Western International Band Clinic. He also conducted the DA Symphony Orchestra at the FMEA President’s Concert and appeared as guest conductor with the DA Jazz Ensemble I at The Midwest Clinic in 2024.

From 2014 to 2021, he served as Director of Bands at Merritt Island High School in Brevard County, Florida, where he grew the band program in both size and quality, cultivating a tradition of musical excellence and student leadership. He also taught a private flute studio of ten students, many of whom made the Florida All-State and Brevard All-County Bands.

A passionate music educator, conductor, and flutist, he has been a guest clinician for ensembles of all ages, He earned his Master of Music in Conducting from Baylor University, where he studied conducting with Dr. J. Eric Wilson, jazz improvisation with Mr. Alex Parker, and flute with Dr. Charlotte Daniel. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education with Honors from The Florida State University. His professional affiliations include the National Association for Music Education, Florida Bandmasters Association, and WASBE. He is immensely proud of all his former students, who continue to inspire him every day to keep teaching, performing, and making music.
